While its extremely popular with many tourists, Iceland’s appearance to those of us in America as a harsh remote place. With that stigma, I think Devin was surprised when I picked Iceland to be our next trip. During my initial research that led to my decision I found three things that stuck out.
- Natural splendor
- Drive on the right side of the road
- Card payments are the norm
When to go?
I learned that timing of this trip is extremely important since Iceland does live up to it’s name has a harsh winter. I’m planning for a May trip where it will still be cold but the tourist population will be low. Daylight is also interesting in Iceland. In May through August the sun only sets for three hours and during the winter its very dark.
The island of Iceland has a main highway (highway 1) that goes around the entire island. This should be the main road that we will use as its the only option for transit. I looked at not renting a car but it would make us use Reykjavik as a base more than I wanted. I read that it’s a nice town but its much better to get our and explore.
What to see?
Planning trips online is constantly evolving but I usually find myself going back to the same places to get ideas.

I chose to book a kayak trip with Borea Adventures in Ísafjörður and a glacier walk at the Vatnajökull Glacier. There were other tours I was interested in but cost was a factor and I felt we would be able to explore on the cheap.
Hopefully the trip is a success.
