I love this town!
Timing probably affects this feeling. We arrived quite late in the day, just after 5, and most shops close at 5 or 6.
Rothenburg
We also got to the train station just after 10 and most shops don’t open until 10. Given the high tourist nature of this town, I’m kind of glad things happened as they did and we missed the crowds. Although I do wish we had been able to visit the museums – the German Christmas museum and the Medieval Crime Museum.
Rothenburg made (fake) history come alive for me. I read a lot of fantasy and a fair amount takes place in medieval type worlds. As I walked along the wall and past the arrow slits, it was easy to imagine the soldiers of yore keeping watch for invaders and firing upon them as necessary.
It was equally easy imagining the townsfolk living the same medieval lifestyle. Chris even saw someone shaking out a rug from the second floor without care for the passers by below much like what occurred with chamber pots so long ago!
I think perhaps my favorite part is the winding cobblestone roads. None of the roads travel in a straight line for long and there are all sorts of various alleys and pathways. My need to explore every path presented was seriously challenged. It’s a good thing this is such a small town or I’d have never left!
