Š for Šibenik

Quick Croatian pronunciation lesson. Š is pronounced as a “SH” sound.

We drove from Plitvička jezera (the Č is a “CH” sound) to Šibenik. Actually Devin drove and I did my best to help but ended up cracking jokes as my wife does not like to pass slow traffic using the oncoming lane. Croatia has a fairly mountainous region that we had to cross and there were several tunnels.

Once on the other side we noticed that the terrain was similar to southern California. We stopped at a service station to grab some Coke Zero and I was able to take a picture.

Šibenik

We made it to Šibenik and luckily our GPS was able to navigate us to the correct location. We parked in a pay for parking spot and while Devin went to locate the AirBnB place I was left trying to figure out how to pay for parking. Lucky for me Devin found the operators rather quickly.

The room is three stories above a cafe right on the bay. There is a shared balcony on the roof that has some impressive views.

Getting the lay of the land

After we checked in and got the lay of the land (Our apartment entrance is through the cafe!) we went exploring. We headed down the waterfront to a beach on the far side.

We got to the beach and then started to wind our way through the town. The city has an amazing network of streets, side-streets and passages. We spent a lot of time going through shops and looking at cafe menus. Even bought some wine.

Wine and pizza

After a pizza and some more exploring we headed back to our roof top terrace where we had some wine in the setting sun.  After having had a couple of libations we decided to wander the city again. This time discovering a cemetery, St. James Cathedral, and more cool side-streets.
