Cologne Sight Seeing

We took a free walking tour of Cologne in the afternoon. Getting there we took the long way and walked down the Rhine river.  Our tour guide started by explaining the Cologne coat of arms while were at one of the four city gates.

The top half has three crowns which are symbolic of the magi or wise men who gave Jesus some groovy gifts when he was born. More on them later. The black things on the field of white are supposed to be teardrops. They form a reminder of Cologne’s patron Saint Ursula. The guide’s English wasn’t the best during the explanation of this part but I believe there were some Catholic virgins who were killed at some point.

Invest in relics

Well in the 5th century the count of virgins and companions was eleven. However as the market for relics grew the martyred rose to 11,000 and included bones of horses, men, and virtually anything with a skeletal system.

The main event in Cologne is the Dom. Dom is cathedral in German.  It’s an impressive church. One of the treasures it contains is the Shrine of the Three Kings. Yeah those guys from the Coat of Arms bones are kept here. In a gold hut of sorts.
