Freiburg and Titisee

We arrived in Freiburg at the main train station. Looked up where our Airbnb was and plotted our course on our phones. With only one wrong turn we were there in less than 15 minutes.

We’d had a long day so I grabbed the beer our host had left in the fridge for me and then headed to bed.

The next day we awoke and headed to the tourist office and to explore. Along the way we got breakfast, ran into a wedding, and discovered a cool church.  We didn’t find much at the tourist office but there was a worthy market around the church. We strolled around a bit and looked at the items for sale.

Putting the fun in funicular

From my research I knew Freiburg had a funicular, incline plane railway, that went up a hill. We headed for the hill but the funicular didn’t look worthy of the five euro round trip cost so we hiked up the hill.

On the way up we discovered a extreme kids play ground. Devin tried out the slide and I remained at the bottom ready to dial 112.

The hill was called Schlossberg and belongs to the black forest. There have been structures on this hill since the 11th century and many of the ruins are still there today. We had some great views from the top.

There was even a mini golf course on the side of the hill.

Finding the hiking

After our descent we grabbed some lunch and ice cream and headed back to the airbnb. We decided to give the tourist info center another go and ask for any recommended hiking that we could do in the evening.

The tourist info rep gave us two options and we chose the one with a lake. Lake Titisee. Since see is lake in German that last sentence has some redundancy in it. We bought train tickets and headed to Titisee.

Once at Titisee we attempted to follow the sheet that the guide had photocopied and we made it to a trail.  It started at a strange foot bath park thingy. It didn’t look to appealing. Continuing on the trail we found signs like we had the last time we were hiking in Germany.

This one was especially helpful.

Why can’t more hikes have cows?

The hike was nice with great views and some cows.  We eventually made it around the lake as we were loosing sunlight.  At 21:30 we got back to the train station and headed back to Freiburg.
