Eating Our Way Through the MN State Fair

Back in the day (possibly even decades ago? Eek!), my family and I would go to the MN State Fair every year.  I distinctly remember parking and immediately stopping to buy strawberries and cream near the entrance.  This was closely followed by corn on the cob and the mini chocolate chip cookies in a bucket.  YUM!  I honestly couldn’t tell you if we went on rides or not.  We probably did.  I know we checked out the animals and the various crafts.  But the most memorable parts of the fair are the food.

I just returned from a whirlwind weekend with my Wisconsin/Minnesota family which included a mini family reunion at the MN State Fair (thanks mom for coordinating!).  I am here to tell you that little has changed for us in regards to fairs.  We are still in it for the food!

Unfortunately, my chariot was an hour late arriving and the hunger was STRONG by the time we made it.  A stop was made for Pronto Pup’s just as we arrived and they were confirmed to be delicious.  After that, we discussed our must have lists.  Mine was a bucket full of mini cookies which the crew had passed on their way to get pups so we headed off in search of breakfast / second breakfast.

After sampling the ooey gooey goodness that is fresh from the oven chocolate chip cookies we headed to the food court (yes, there really is a food court) for the best cheese curds per prior year sampling(s).

There was a food court and we were there for the food so we kinda went our own way for a little bit.  While waiting for everyone to reconvene, I took a moment to people watch outside where it was not only cooler but so much quieter.  Katrina came to join me and graciously posed for a photo so I could get a picture of this dude carrying what appears to be a green broom.

We had so many questions!  But so few answers!  So we did the logical thing and made up our own.  Somewhere at the fair there is a booth that is helping Kickstart a Bewitched remake.  They’re green witches focused on using their powers to help save the environment.  This kind gentleman benevolently kickstarted their remake and received a glorious green broom in return.  Not only is it great for sweeping up messes but it’s free advertisement for the reboot!  Yay for Bewitched!!!

The answers came to us as we headed to the booth selling fancy tater tots called Irish Tater Kegs.  Harkening back to our days on the Alaskan cruise, we rated these as either Meh or slightly less than Meh.  Don’t worry tho!  We put them away just the same.  There are starving kids and stuff.  We got this ????

At one point I spied the nirvana that is Dole Whips and I immediately got in line for a fix.  While I waited, I sent this picture to Chris and started to type the following lyrics “I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it.  I’m about to…” throughout the entire typing I kept expecting the all knowing Google to prompt for the next word.  I was left disappointed.  I told my family of my disappointment and inquired if they could do better.  They could not ????

We lost a little bit of momentum and/or room in our bellies but we still managed to get some of the classic roasted corn on the cob and try out some new things like Aussie Fries, Onion “Rings”, and a new MN apple: First Kiss.

We didn’t JUST eat.  Okay we mostly ate but we did also explore some of the classic things.  Peyton rode the carousel a few times with various escorts.  I found random things to take selfies with and there were giant vegetables!

Throughout the day I snapped a few random pictures to share with Chris.  He’s never been to the MN State Fair and he was rather impressed with the permanence of some of the structures.  Hello food court!  So I present to you some more rather random images as discovered at the fair.

PS regarding the Bewitched Kickstarter, it’s actually a super duper pet hair remover!  That you can almost see in this rather awkward photo…

Turns out the “broom” is actually a fancy rolly thing to remove pet hair. This guy’s sales pitch was awesome! I almost bought one myself!
