Devin and I have a hobby addiction: Board Games. Tonight we met 3 people from the meetup group Cologne On Board to play board games at a local restaurant/bar.
We found our meetup peoples at Café Kandinsky and were introduced to Kevin who was from America and another man from Cologne. I was unable to understand his name and it would have taken me the better part of the evening to learn.
Kevin really wanted to play Puerto Rico. This was one of the early games I had been introduced to. An added challenge was that Kevin’s copy was in German. Kevin was able to give a quick synopsis of the rules in English and we were ready to play.
Devin ended up winning and stealing a victory I thought I had in the bag. I ended up coming in second.
We found striking similarities between gamers here and gamers we know back home. This will be an over generalization but a lot of the serious gamers we know are introverts and when playing a game there is little or no conversation about anything else. This was our experience tonight. A lot of talk about the game but no external chit chat. Additionally there were people who didn’t like long games, difficult games, or other varieties that we encounter back home. Since a lot of games have had a European origin there is a tendency to assign a type of game to a culture. Not true.
After Devin trounced all of us in Puerto Rico another person, Victoria, joined us and we played a bluffing game called Rumble in the Dungeon.
This game was rather silly and not worth describing here. After three rounds and Kevin winning we called it a night and went back to our hotel.
