Follow up from previous day of car trouble: We got a new car and everything is well again. Miriam and Wolfgang saved our trip.
When you are browsing travel books, YouTube, or those influencers on TikTok you will sometimes be guided to certain cities or towns in the regions or countries you’re researching. I think Salzburg was this example on this trip. Disclaimer: I’ve been to Salzburg before by myself on a business trip and I provided Devin with some of my experiences.
Salzburg is a picturesque city on the north side of the Alps. Its defining piece of architecture is the Hohensalzburg Fortress that prominently rises above the city on its own mountain. It’s also known for its feature in several scenes in the Sound of Music.
Depending on your interests, certain cities may be worth days of your time to explore. Others are worth a day trip or a few hours at best. For Devin and myself I think Salzburg fits into the half day range. This isn’t a negative review of Salzburg. It’s more self reflection and understanding on what Devin and I value when we travel. We’re much more drawn to the outdoors and unique experiences than historical buildings and museums.
That being said, if you find yourself in Bavaria or Austria should you go to Salzburg? Yeah, it’s worth it. Explore the fortress, walk along the river, and check out a Motzart museum. Should you stay in Salzburg for multiple days? It depends on what you’re into but I doubt it.
I was taking a break from driving today and Devin took over. She’s really great at not hitting any bridges with cars. Made it from Munich to Salzburg in about 2 hours. Other than yesterday’s mishap driving in Germany and Austria has been a true pleasure. Roads are well marked and even though our German is not as good as it should be, there is enough context provided through sign symbology to get you where you need to go.
On each leg of the driving portion of our trip I’ve noticed something different. This time it was the speed limit decals on the back of trucks. A bit of internet sleuthing makes me believe that this is the top speed that these particular trucks can do in certain countries. This Reddit comment probably sums it up best:
On arrival, we walked around a good portion of Salzburg, explored the fortress, and window shopped. It was an excellent day but we were ready to leave and head to Berchtesgaden where will be doing some hiking for the next few days.
