Devin and I teamed up today to tackle Canyonlands National Park. It’s a massive park that is divided into three distinct areas. The entrance for one of those areas, Islands in the Sky, is about 15 miles from our hotel here in Moab, UT. We kicked off the day by visiting the Mesa Arch.
After appreciating the sun rise at the Mesa Arch we headed to whale rock. I’ve come to the conclusion that the naming of landmarks in Utah is a bit off probably due to extreme heat and lack of water. Whale rock looks nothing like a whale and looks a lot like the other rocks around it. We did the one mile trail to the top and enjoyed the wind and view.
Wrapping up the Islands in the Sky eating lunch, listening to a ranger talk, and driving around the park. Gold star for us as we hit visitor center first on this park!
The Needles
After departing Islands in the Sky we wanted to visit one of the other sections of the park called The Needles. The Needles was 100 miles south and took us two hours to arrive. Once there we visited the visitor center and got an idea of the things we could see. The Needles is primarily for backpackers and 4×4 off-road enthusiasts but we found some small hiking and sight seeing opportunities for us. The first of which was an arch that looked like a wooden shoe. The first landmark in Utah that lived up to it’s name.
The second and last stop we made in the Needles was Pothole Point. This is basically a large rock that you hike across with divots. I’ve seen these be repaired before and suggested to Devin that we stop at the visitors center before leaving and inform them of how black top works.
This was super cool!! I loved the videos, although with the wind it was a bit hard to hear you. What a cool view! Also – the title cracks me up!! I love following your adventures!
